Introduction to University of Hasselt
From the University of Hasselt, the Transportation Research Institute participates in DDSS.
IMOB (Transportation Research Institute) is a research institute of Hasselt University. IMOB currently employs approximately 40 staff members who carry out fundamental and applied research in the fields of transportation and traffic safety.

IMOB, the Transportation Research Institute, is an independent scientific research institute, connected with Hasselt University. She tries to achieve her mission on an national and on an international level by:
- Carrying out scientifically founded fundamental and applied research
- Offering transportation and traffic education
- Providing service on various levels
For each of these pillars, IMOB sets several objectives:
Research objectives
- Improving knowledge on traffic and transportation issues through multi-disciplinary research and by developing new and improved research methods.
- Contributing to the development of a framework in which the creation of sustainable traffic an transportation is possible. This way IMOB promotes well-founded and new solutions that support a long term view. These solutions can serve as an instrument (or guide) for transportation management within the various professional sectors.
- Carrying out scientific research to support the policy on traffic and transportation.
- Participating in (inter)national research projects leading to an integration of knowledge.
- Actively participating in (inter)national scientific conferences.
- Publishing research reports and news publications.
Educational objectives
IMOB supports education in traffic and transportation on three different levels:
- About 15 Ph.D. students actively research various fields of traffic and transportation.
- IMOB participates in Bachelor and Master studies in traffic science, offered at the Hasselt University. This program tains traffic specialists who approach traffic science in a multi-disciplinary way in order to come up with integrated solutions for traffic and transportation problems.
- IMOB organizes modules about topics within the field of traffic and transportation. In doing this, the institute targets people who are professionally involved with issues like traffic safety and transportation. This way we meet the necessity of lifelong learning.
Service objectives
- IMOB supports and collaborates with prominent players in the field of transportation and traffic, including governments (National, Flemish, Provincial, Municipal), police forces, public interest organisations, special interest groups, consultancy firms.
- IMOB contributes to the identification of traffic safety and transportation problems and translates solutions into practice by means of research.
- IMOB organizes and participates in activities that are closely linked with transportation and traffic safety issues.
