Introduction to University of Ljubljana

Faculty of Architecture

The Faculty of Architecture of the University in Ljubljana (est. 1919) is one of the challenging Central European schools of architecture.  There are almost 700 students enrolled in the graduate course while the teaching and associate staff includes some 65 employees. Enrolment in the Faculty entails an entrance exam. Each year 135 regular and 45 part-time students are accepted. In the year 2000 the 3000th student graduated from the Faculty. Our graduates are known for their general and professionally profiled knowledge and systematic project approach enabling successful employment in various fields of artistic and architectural endeavours – from graphic design, scenography, interior design, architectural and urban design to physical planning. The new single master study programme in architecture started 2008/2009. The first doctorate in the field of urban planning was finished in 1938 and the first in architectural design in 1960. The reseach education programme is currently under Bologna-redevelopment, planned for implementation in  2009/2010. The research tradition of the faculty is based on Joze Plecnik's roots, the sensitive approaches to architecturally 'vulnerable', even 'fragile' specific conditions of the cultural environments, balancing artistic and technical points of view. It integrates traditional, pragmatic, and only recently, also liberal research. The linkage with DDSS derives from the active role of some Ljubljana based staff members within the eCAADe and related communities (see: CUMINCAD database - http://cumincad.scix.net/).
